INTERSTATES THROUGH KNOXVILLE AND KNOX COUNTY

SmartFIX40 Project

  • I-40 Eastbound between Rutledge Pike & I-640 Interchange
    April 25: I-40 Eastbound has been reduced to one lane east of the I-640 Interchange towards Asheville Highway for fourteen months to allow three lanes of I-640 traffic to have priority coming back onto I-40, due to the closure of I-40 in Downtown Knoxville. Be alert for new traffic patterns and new lane designations in this area.
  • I-40 Eastbound Motorists from the Downtown area approaching Asheville Highway (Exit 394):
    April 25: Exiting at Asheville Highway (Exit 394) will be prohibited for the next fourteen months. This is a safety measure, since I-40 Eastbound motorists would have to cross three lanes of traffic in a short distance to exit. Consider using Magnolia Avenue or I-275 to I-640. Access to Asheville Highway will be maintained from I-640.
  • I-640 Eastbound between Millertown Pike Exit & I-40 (East End):
    April 25-26: Beginning at 7 p.m., there will be alternating lane closures and brief rolling roadblocks as crews modify signs, restripe the roadway and shift traffic. Be alert for sudden stops and expect delays. Once this work is complete, I-640 East will carry three lanes back onto I-40 East.
  • I-275 Southbound between Woodland & Baxter Avenues:
    April 29: There will be lane closures, 7 p.m.-6 a.m., as crews modify overhead signs. Motorists should use caution.
  • NOTE: April 30, 2008 at 11 p.m.
    The following access ramps will close for 14 months for reconstruction:
    • I-40 Eastbound access ramp from Western/Dale Avenue
    • I-40 Eastbound access ramp from Henley Street Tunnel
    • I-40 Westbound access ramp from Hall of Fame Drive
  • NOTE: May 1, 2008 - Beginning at 12:01 a.m.
    The following will close to "thru traffic" for 14 months for reconstruction:
    • I-40 Westbound through Downtown Knoxville just west of Hall of Fame Drive (Exit 389)
    • I-40 Eastbound through Downtown Knoxville just east of James White Parkway (Exit 388A)
  • I-40 Eastbound between Papermill Drive & I-640 Interchange:
    Be alert for new traffic patterns & lane designations at the I-640 interchange.
    • The three right lanes approaching the I-640 Interchange will carry I-40 “thru traffic” to I-640/Detour 40 East (Exit 385).
    • The two left lanes will carry motorists to the Downtown area and I-75 Northbound traffic to I-275 North/ Detour 75 North (Exit 387A).
  • I-40 Eastbound between 17th Street (Exit 387) and James White Parkway (Exit 388 A):
    Be alert for new traffic patterns & lane designations at the I-275 interchange (Exit 387A).
    • The two right lanes approaching the I-275 Interchange will carry motorists onto I-275/ Detour 75 North (Exit 387A).
    • The two left lanes will drop at Henley Street (Exit 388) and James White Parkway (Exit 388A).
  • I-40 Westbound between Asheville Highway (Exit 394) & I-640 (Exit 393):
    Be alert for new traffic patterns & lane designations approaching the
    I-640 interchange.
    • I-40 West “thru traffic” and motorists wishing to access I-75 should follow I-640/Detour 40 West (Exit 393).
    • Motorists wishing to access (Rutledge Pike- Exit 392) (Cherry Street- Exit 390) and (Hall of Fame/Broadway- Exit 389) should follow “Downtown/Local Traffic Only”.
  • I-40 Westbound at I-640 (Exit 385):
    I-40 West has been reduced from three lanes to two just west of I-640 East (Exit 385). Use caution through this area.
  • US 129 (Alcoa Highway) Northbound Ramp to I-40 East/I-275 North:
    Be alert for a new merging condition at this location and use extreme caution.
  • SR 33/US 441 Broadway between 5th Avenue & Depot:
    April 28 & 29: This section of Broadway will be closed to traffic, 8 p.m.-6 a.m., as crews remove an overhead bridge deck. Motorists should follow signed detour route during this time.
  • I-275 Northbound between Baxter Avenue & Woodland Avenue:
    April 26: There will be a right lane closure, 7:30 a.m.-11 a.m., as crews perform ramp repairs.

    • Washington Avenue: street closures between N. Cherry Street and Mundy Street through 4/25.
    • Woodbine Avenue: street closures between Milligan Street and N. Castle Street through 4/25
    • Henley Street Bridge (SR 33):
      April 28-30: Be alert for lane closures in both directions, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., as crews perform bridge inspections.
    • Parkview Avenue: street closures between S. Harrison Street to S. Cherry Street through 4/30..
  • Long-Term Closures
    • Broadway between 5th Avenue & Depot:
      April 28 & 29: This section of Broadway will be closed to traffic, 8 p.m.-6 a.m., as crews remove an overhead bridge deck. Motorists should follow signed detour route during this time.
    • Emory Road between Bishop Road and Norris Freeway:
      Motorists should be alert for lane shifts, workers present, changed conditions and possible delays in this area.
    • Emory Road between Dan McBee & Dyer Roads:
      Motorists should be alert for lane shifts, reduced speeds and changing conditions through this bridge replacement project.
    • E. Jackson Avenue: street closure between Gay Street and Central indefinitely.
    • S. Gay Street: street closures between W. Jackson Avenue and W. Vine Avenue through 5/1.
    • Forest Avenue: street closures between 12 th Street and World’s Fair Drive through 5/1.
    • Easton Road: street closures between Colonial Drive and Hartford Road through 5/2.
    • Lacy Road: street closures between Keck Road and Murray Drive through 5/2.
    • Magazine Road: street closures between Adelia Drive and Oliver Road through 5/2.
    • Bearden Place: street closures between Broadway and Irwin Street through 5/16.
    • Murray Drive: street closures between Clinton Highway and Emerald Hills Lane through 5/16.
    • Linden Avenue: street closures between N. Chestnut Street and N. Cherry Street through 5/30.
    • Linden Avenue: street closures between N. Cherry Street and N. Harrison Street through 5/30.
    • Noelton Drive: street closures between Kingston Pike and Hiawatha Drive through 6/1.
    • Woodson Drive: street closures between Alcoa Highway and Oakvale Drive through 6/27.
